김정윤 선교사 - 스리랑카 선교 보고 (5.7.2017)

세계적으로 유명한 실론 홍차가 재배되는스리랑카의 고산지대에 '코타갈라 (Kotagala) 라는 지역이 있습니다. 이곳은 불교, 이슬람교, 힌두교, 무속신앙들과 더불어 세속적인 가치관들이 충돌하며 얽히며 존재하는 곳입니다. 멀리서 바라보면, 반짝이는 햇살 아래 아낙들이 무리를 이루어 찻잎을 따는 풍경은 평화로와 보입니다. 관광객이나 이곳을 다녀가는 외부인들에게는 더할 나위없이 최적인 이 햇살 좋은 날이, 차밭에서 하루 종일 찻잎을 따야하는 그들에게는 숨막히는 더위가 더해지며, 살갗이 타도록 볕이 따가운 고된 날의 하루일 뿐입니다. 차밭의 노동자들은, 그들이 수고하는 노력에 합당한 대우를 받지 못함에도 불구하고, 더 나은 삶의 환경을 요구할 수 있는 힘도 방법도 없습니다. 뿐만 아니라, 차밭에서 길고 고된 노동을 견뎌 힘겹게 번 돈 중의 일부는 차 재배 농장에서 세운 각처의 힌두 사원에 강제적으로 종교세를 내야합니다. 이러한 고된 노동과 환경은 이곳의 소중하고 귀한 사람들로 하여금 삶의 의욕을 잃게 만듭니다. 흡사 현대판 노예제도와 다름이 없습니다. 적은 임금은 이들로 겨우 하루 하루를 연명하고 다음날 또다시 차밭에 나가 노역을 하도록하는 것입니다. 스리랑카의 주요 차 생산지에 위치해 있는 코타갈라의 대부분의 주민들도 이러한 차 재배 농장의 환경에서 일합니다.

또한 차농장의 회사들이 이 지역의 대부분의 토지를 소유하고 있기 때문에 이 지역의 주민들이 토지를 소유할 수 있는 기회는 흔치 않습니다. 만약 토지를 구입 할 수 있는 기회가 있다하더라도 이곳 사람들의 경제력으로는 감당할 수 없는 높은 가격으로 거래됩니다. 이러한 이유로 대부분의 차밭 종사자들이 마을이나 시가지가 아닌 차밭 농장 깊숙이 위치한 농장 소유의 공동 주거 건물에서 생활합니다. 먼 거리와 교통수단의 부재로 많은 경우 시가지에 나오는 것이 제한되고, 특히 아이들이 학교에 통학하는 것이 쉽지 않은 경우가 많습니다.

약 17년전 한 사람이 이곳 코타갈라에 복음을 위한 부르심을 받았습니다. 그 분의 이름은 모한 목사님입니다. 모한 목사님은 하나님의 부르심을 받아 코타갈라에 정착한 이후로 이곳의 사람들을 위해 쉼이 없이 일하며 섬겨 왔습니다. 더 편하고 환경이 나은 곳으로의 초대와 권유도 있었지만, 코타갈라와 이곳의 사람들에 대한 하나님의 부르심을 놓지 않고 충성되게 일해왔습니다. 사람들 눈에 드러나지 않는 곳에서 낮은 모습으로의 섬김을 택한 모한 목사님의 순전함이 하나님께 귀하게 여김을 받음을 믿습니다. 하나님과 사람들 앞에 겸손한 마음을 가진 모한 목사님은 사탄의 장악 아래 복음을 알지 못하고 살아가는 코타갈라 사람들을 향한 지금도 그 신실한 비전을 잃지않고 나아갑니다. 그는 스리랑카 태생으로 복음 전파의 갈급함을 마음에 품고, 주를 알지 못하는 이들에게 빛을 전하기위해 앞에 놓여진 많은 방해와 장애물들을 넘어서기 위며 고군분투 해왔습니다. 지역 내 차밭과 마을들을 돌며 심방을 가고 집집마다 방문 전도를 하며 이곳의 이방인들 가운데 하나님께서 높임 받으실 그 날을 향해 나아가고 있습니다. 또한 믿지 않는자들에게 복음의 말씀을 전하고 진리에 갈급한 이들을 위한 성경공부도 진행 하고 있습니다.

가난 속에 태어나 낮은 사회적 신분을 물려받고, 교육받지 못함과 소외됨, 그리고 깨어진 가정과 영적인 어두움, 이 모든 상황들은 이들로 스스로 생각하길 우리는 버려졌고 저주 받아 이 세상에서 가치가 없는 존재들이라고 믿게 만들어갑니다. 이 때문에 이곳의 많은 사람들이 알콜중독빠지고 그릇된 삶의 모습을 선택해왔습니다. 이 결과로 가장 고통 받는이들은 이곳의 아이들입니다. 참으로 어두운 세력과 혼탁의 영이 이들을 붙들고 있습니다.

감사한것은 복음을 위해 오랜 시간 애써 온 결과 모한 목사님의 사랑의 수고가 열매를 맺고있습니다. 운영중인 마을의 유치원에는 아이들의 수가 30여명으로 늘어났고, 새신도의 수가 예배당을 채우기 시작했습니다. 하나님께서 모든 필요를 채우심을 믿고 빈손으로 사역을 시작한 그들의 사역에 사탄이 쉽게 자기의 영토를 내어주는것같지는 않습니다. 자신의 권세를 놓지않기위해 곳곳에서 맹공격을 펼치기 시작했습니다. 현재 교회와 학교로 사용되고 있는 건물의 주인이 이번 달 말까지 장소를 비우라는 통보를 받았습니다. 저희가 새로운 장소를 찾기 위해 수소문했지만 이 지역의 어느 건물주도 교회와 학교를 위해 장소를 대여하기를 원치 않는 상황입니다. 이곳은 아직도 복음에 대해 매우 적대적입니다. 이 때문에 새로운 장소를 찾기 위해 여러방편으로 시도해보았지만 역부족이었습니다. 더이상 이곳 저곳을 옮겨다니지 않고 사역의 기초를 공고히 하기 위해서는 대지를 구입하여야 한다는 결론에 도달했습니다. 이것을 놓고 기도하던 중에 부지 구입을 위한 흔치 않은 기회가 생겼습니다. 이 부지는 약 300평 남짓 되는 면적에 마을의 중심 도로가에 위치해 있고 오두막 같은 작은 건물 한동이 포함되어 있습니다.

모한목사님과 코타갈라 교회 성도들이 어려운 형편가운데 그들이 할 수 있는 이상을 드린 결과 부지 구입을 위한 재정의 약 50%를 모았고 다른 익명의 기부자가 헌금해서 지금 전체 필요한금액의 70%가량 모인 상태입니다. 1400만원정도만 더 채워지면 학교와 예배처소를 위한 대지를 구입할수있습니다. 여러분도 함께 기도해주시고 동참하셔서 이곳 코타갈라에서 17년전에 시작된 주님의 역사가 아름답게 열매 맺어질 수있기를 소원합니다.

HANDS Sri Lanka Bethel School is located in the Central province, the high land of Sri Lanka. The majority people here are Tamil, the believers of Hinduism. They are the descendants of people of Tamil Nadu from Southern India, who were forcefully relocated by the British rule during 19th century to be put into the tea plantation for its labours. They are still working in the tea plantations with the minimum wages and the hard conditions for both working and living. Sri Lankans call this people ‘Indian Tamil’, distinguishing them from ‘Sri Lankan Tamil’ who are natives to this island together with the majority Sinhalese.

Nearly for 17 years, sister Bawani, together with her husband Pastor Mohan of El Bethel church, has been serving as a principle of Bethel School. The school nurtures the students of 3 to 5 years old age by two teachers, including sister Bawani. The curriculum includes basic subject, such as English, Math, Tamil, and Art&Music activities, as a preparation of elementary education. As mentioned earlier, Hinduism is prevailing in this area, hence there are many challenges in sharing gospel openly. One of the main privileges Bethel School has is that there is everyday opportunity to interact with the children and their families. The relationships are built between the teachers and the children as well as the families as Sister Bawani actively encourage the parents’ participation in the school. Bethel School’s tuition fee is considerably low compare to other preschools in the area, aiming to meet more needy population of the town, mostly from the tea estates. Having Christ’s heart in the core, the school is known for its accepting and caring treatment to the children and their families in the town, because of the way the school teach and care for children.

For the moment, there are 15 students, once increased up to 45 students before the school faced some difficulties in search of a stable place for the school. Because the owner of the building which the school has been using last seventeen years has notified the school to move out. The school was in a no position to acquire any available building in this Hindu town for its purpose. When the news, the school may be out onto the street, spreads out; many of parents transferred their children to a good facilitated Hindu school which locates in the center of the town. Thanks to God, there were helping hands, who sacrificially supported both with prayers and finances so that we now have secured the land for the school.

In new leap for its refurbishment, sister Bawani and everyone are striving to strengthen the foundation of the school. Through these endeavours, Bethel School will continue to be the channel of blessing to share the love of Christ in Kotagala. For this, further development of the educational contents, management system, and teacher’s training is a must. We expect to register the school as an educational foundation in order to be able to facilitate active international cooperation with various bodies. From November 2017, Yoon Kim started to work with Bethel School to assist the school’s development until the end of 2018 (expected).

Sri Lanka Project

A few weeks ago, I mentioned about the need in Sri Lanka. In such a short period of time the money has poured in and we now have made the contract for the land. The owner will submit the land to us by 1st of April and we can start to build the school. They need the place to meet, learn, and worship as soon as possible however they have no finance to build as of now. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. Thank you!
